Scar massage: will it help remove scars?
Scar massage is something often overlooked, but it can help to remove the appearance of scars. Wait until a scar is healed and then pinch with thumb and forefinger. Roll the scar between the thumb and forefinger moving along the length of it slowly. Try doing this for 2 minutes or so at first, if you feel any pain stop as it might make things worse. Older scars can be massaged for longer.
If the scar feels tender, just try gently rubbing the scar in circular motions hich will help with blood flow. Once you have finnished massaging the area it is a good idea to apply a greasy topical oil, cream or gel. Massaging can help to speed up the scar healing process, but if you notice the area getting redder it is best to stop. There is a fine line between irritating the skin and helping the natural healing process. Newer scars will require adding a liquid like Vitamin E or other topical scar removal product to create less friction.
Try scar massage once or twice a day at first, and greadually extend the time and number of times you massage the area. Benefits are best on raised scars and it can also help with scar redness too. Like most scar treatments it will take time so be patient and you should see results. There are various alternative scar treatments to remove scars and massaging is certainly one worth trying.
