How effective is vitamin E in scars treatment?

Vitamin E is widely promoted as a scar treatment, but little is actually known about the results. Personally I have used it on the advice of others alongside other products. It is available in pharmacists in gel capsules. I used to break a capsule open and spread a little of the oily gel on my scars, then swallow the rest.
Scar treatment with vitamin E is done by most people for side benefits. By this I mean that it is used to support a larger skin healing regime. For example when I used it I only applied it when other topical creams were not on my arm. Because it is an oily gel I found it useful to apply before bedtime. This kept the scar moist overnight whereas other scar treatment products will soon dry out.
Vitamin E is said to be good for overall skin health as it is needed when the body needs to create new skin. It seems that vitamin E for scar treatment isn’t necessary and should be avoided if you notice a rash forming. It surely can’t hurt to make sure you are eating food with plenty of Vitamin E in it, or even swallow capsules as a diet supplement whilst your skin is healing.
